“We Stand with the people of Los Angeles”

Sonoma County, CA — The Sonoma County Democratic Party condemns the violent escalation of federal immigration enforcement across Los Angeles, the obstruction of Representative Maxine Waters in her attempt to visit detained constituents, and the recent unlawful detainment of labor leader David Huerta, who was released on bail after reportedly being tased and brutalized while attempting to visit union members.

These are not isolated incidents. They are coordinated assaults on civil rights, democratic norms, and the foundational values of this state.

What’s happening in California is not about public safety. It is a political act born from the murkiest depths of Trump’s motivations: manipulation, control, and fear.

Witnesses across Los Angeles have reported agents entering schools, homes, and businesses without clear identification, many in full face coverings. Children have been handcuffed. Bystanders detained for filming. People taken into unmarked vans. These are not the actions of a functioning democracy but tactics of authoritarian regimes.

As proud Californians and members of the fourth-largest economy in the world, we know we represent what Trump fears most: a multiracial, worker-powered democracy that refuses to be ruled by fear. California has long been a beacon of what the United States claims to represent: home to a diverse, resilient, and passionate people, rooted in community.

Let us be clear: immigrant labor is essential to California’s economy. Immigrants aren’t separate from our communities, they are our communities. They are our coworkers, our neighbors, our friends, our family.

But this is about far more than protecting our economy. It’s about protecting each other. That these crackdowns are centered in Los Angeles—a city defined by its resilience, diversity, and organized resistance—is no coincidence. We stand with Los Angeles. We stand with every person, regardless of immigration status, who has a right to live safely, freely, and with due process under the law.

We Call For:

– Immediate access for elected representatives to all detainment centers, to ensure the safety and dignity of those taken without charges, identification, or legal recourse.

—Full accountability for the obstruction of oversight and the abuse of legal process.

—An end to the violent, extralegal raids occurring across our state—tactics that echo the darkest moments in authoritarian history.

—Protection of the constitutional right of public servants, including Representative Maxine Waters, to fulfill their duties without interference or censorship.

—A full halt to federal overreach that violates California’s constitutional right to self-governance.

—Fellow California cities to follow the example of Glendale and immediately cancel any existing contracts with ICE or the Department of Homeland Security.

We will not be silent.

To our community: Show up. Speak out. Refuse to look away.
Because if they come for one of us, they come for all of us.
