WHEREAS the City Council of Rohnert Park, having passed Ordinance No. 954 banning the sale and use of fireworks in the city, has listened to the concerns of citizens on this issue, suspending the ordinance and placing a referendum on the matter to a vote of citizens in a Special Municipal Election on September 14, 2021; and
WHEREAS fireworks of any kind create significant risks of igniting fires during fire season in the midst of historic droughts due to climate change, and can damage property and endanger lives, causing a significant drain on public safety resources in Rohnert Park; and
WHEREAS fireworks are already illegal in six other local cities as well as the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Sonoma County Democratic Party endorses Ordinance No. 954, and urges citizens in Rohnert Park to vote ‘YES’ on the referendum, MEASURE D.
