The Sonoma County Democratic Party voted to support the Resolution for the Future of the Sonoma Developmental Center.
Whereas the historic buildings of the Sonoma Developmental Center, the wildlife corridor and the campus have served the people of California and the County of Sonoma; and
Whereas a plan for its future must preserve the wildlife corridor, and preserve, restore, and repurpose the historic buildings; and
Whereas a plan for its continued sustainability must include economic development which embraces the ecological fragility of the area, the risk of wildfire and the traffic impacts, and must continue to be for the betterment of the people of California and the County of Sonoma and not a touristic destination; and
Whereas the Sonoma Developmental Center provided living wages, secure retirements and health care benefits for employees, and should continue to provide livability in Sonoma County; and
Whereas a housing plan for the site should be at a scale which allows for open space, minimal transportation impacts, affordability, and preservation of ecological and natural resources; now
Therefore be it Resolved that the Sonoma County Democratic Party urges the Board of Supervisors to ensure that development of the SDC site is at an appropriate scale with the protection of SDC’s open space, the Sonoma Valley Wildlife Corridor, the historic district portions of the SDC campus, fire safety and climate resiliency, and the rural character of the surrounding region; and
Be it further Resolved that any economic plan for sustainability of the site include livable wages and be an incubator for climate solutions or other programs which continues to provide service to the State of California and the People of Sonoma County.
